Carlsbad Caverns: New Mexico’s Underground Treasure

  • Over 50 miles of trailheads in it’s 46,766 acre land
  • Located beneath the Guadalupe Mountains
  • Over 250 million year ago this area was under water, but a change in the climate made the formations of this cave possible
  • Thanks to President Calvin Coolidge, this area was established into a National park after he used the Antiquities Act to establish it as a monument
  • The park is open year round except for Christmas, Memorial Day and Labor Day
  • The cave’s temperature is cool but gets hotter the deeper you head
  • Ancient artifacts include drawings found in the caves
  • The 5th longest cave in the world
